Some Thoughts and Reflections about Chemistry in Africa

There is little one can read about the history and the pioneers of chemistry in Africa and even that is mostly written by non-Africans. The idea to document and recognize the pioneers of chemistry began when preparing a chapter on “Achievements of Pharmacognosy in Africa during the 50 year period 1959-2009 to a book published by the American Society of Pharmacognosy. More information was collected during the International Year of Chemistry 2011. The objective of the Fellowship is to complete the work with an African perspective and publish it.  The second objective is to write on the status and future of chemistry in Africa as a short ‘’commentary” to Nature-Chemistry. The third objective of the Fellowship is also to contribute short articles on higher education in Africa
