Second Iso Lomso cohort selected

STIAS is pleased to announce its second cohort for the Iso Lomso Fellowships for Early Career African Researchers.

The STIAS Research and Fellowship Programme Committee recently concluded its selection of the Iso Lomso cohort of fellows for 2018. Seven candidates were offered the prestigious three-year fellowship at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study. They join the first cohort of five candidates to constitute the current STIAS Iso Lomso fellows.

The seven selected candidates are:

  • Elieth Eyebiyi (Male, Benin), PhDs from Université d’Abomey-Calavi in 2012 & INRS Montréal in 2016, currently based at LASDEL Benin (Laboratoire d’Etudes et de Recherche sur les Dynamiques Sociales et le Développement Local), project title: The temporalities of the Informality. The case of Benin-Nigeria Cross-border Fuel Smuggling
  • Claudia Gastrow (Female, South Africa), PhD from the University of Chicago in 2014, based at the Department of Anthropology and Development Studies, University of Johannesburg, project title: Everyday States: Urban Life and Politics in Luanda, Angola
  • Gibson Ncube (Male, Zimbabwe), PhD from Stellenbosch University in 2014, based at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, University of Zimbabwe, project title: Bodies and/as Texts: Representing queer on screen in contemporary Africa
  • Izuchukwu Nwankwo (Male, Nigeria), PhD from Ibadan University in 2014, based at the Department of Theatre Arts, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, project title: A Study of the Interplay of Taboo Subjects and Censorship in Determining the Limits of Humour/Insult in the Four Regions of Africa (North, South, West and East) and their Standup-up Jokes
  • Fara Raharimalala (Female, Madagascar), PhD from Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 & Antananarivo University in 2011, based at the Medical Entomology Unit, Institut Pasteur de Madagascar, project title: Adaptation of mosquito vectors to insecticides used in the Southwest area of the Indian Ocean: implications for vector control
  • Debra Shepherd (Female, South Africa), PhD from VU University Amsterdam & Stellenbosch University, based at the Department of Economics, Stellenbosch University, project title: A transdisciplinary analysis of the role of social identity on performance under social stratification and stigmatisation
  • Mazin Sirry (Male, Sudan), PhD from the University of Cape Town, based at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Medical Sciences and Technology Khartoum, project title: Predictive Computational Modelling of Intramyocardial Biomaterial Therapies towards Personalised Care for Myocardial Infarction

The first periods of residency for each of the fellows have been confirmed and will occur between the months of July 2018 to June 2019. As with the first cohort, STIAS intends to approach its sister institutes for advanced study and others in view of a possible residency abroad for each of the fellows during 2019/2020.

Members of the Programme Committee had earlier shortlisted 24 outstanding applications out of 88 submissions. As in the first round of selections, the committee will consider offering STIAS visiting scholarships to additional applicants.
