The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) and the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development at the University of the Witwatersrand (CoE-Human) together with the DOHaD Africa Chapter are hosting a Summer School in March 2022 at STIAS entitled Developmental Origins of Health and Disease: Consolidating Theory into Practice.
The focus of the Summer School is to build research capacity and a network of young scientists. The curriculum will be delivered by experts from around the world, and will cover topics such as: developmental origins of health and disease theory; DOHaD epidemiology; DOHaD and cardiovascular disease; DOHaD and diabetes; improving maternal health during pregnancy; the emerging role of the father in DOHaD risk; nutrition in early life; gender, poverty and DOHaD risk; optimising adolescent health, including addressing obesity; the importance of DOHaD for African research; DOHaD Africa Chapter; research gaps, study design and opportunities; public health policy and the SDGs.
Target participants are early career professionals in the field of health sciences i.e. MD/PhD level or postdoctoral fellows aged 40 years or below, who have a demonstrated research interest or a background in DOHaD; and are employed in a research institution or a university in any African country. Applicants with PhD or MD degrees must have completed these within the past five years. Applicants with a master’s degree must currently be registered for PhD and provide proof of this.
Funding from STIAS and the CoE-Human is available to support up to 20 young scientists from any African country to attend the Summer School. Participants will be fully sponsored (travel, meals, accommodation) to arrive on Tuesday 15 March and depart on Tuesday 22 March 2022.
