STIAS and Umuzi Publishers invite any interested persons for the launch of Dancing the Death Drill by journalist and author Fred Khumalo.

Fred Khumalo will be in conversation with Prof Grace Musila from the Stellenbosch University English Department. Fred and Grace are both STIAS fellows. He wrote parts of the book during a previous residency and will be in residence at the time of the launch to work on a new novel.

Dancing the Death Drill retells the events surrounding the sinking of the SS Mendi 100 years ago in the English Channel in which 618 black South African troops drowned – one of the worst yet least known maritime disasters in UK waters during the 20th century. See here for a recent book review: https://www.businesslive.co.za/bd/life/books/2017-02-20-book-review-dancing-the-death-drill/

Please RSVP to Christoff Pauw on [email protected] by Thursday, 13 April.
