You are invited to the public launch of the Hidden Years Music Archive website featuring a listening session with music from the archive’s unique vinyl collection curated by sonic historian, Michael Bhatch.
Join us in exploring the remarkable archive of South African alternative popular music that took shape with the arrival of the Woodstock Sound System in Johannesburg.
The Hidden Years Music Archive is one of the biggest popular music archives in South Africa. It was collected by David Marks and documents alternative popular music in southern Africa from 1967 to the early 2000s. The collection is preserved by the Documentation Centre for Music (DOMUS), Stellenbosch University, and formed part of a 10 year archive and research project at the Africa Open Institute (2013-2023), funded by the Volkswagen Foundation.
The project leader, Prof Lizabé Lambrechts, was hosted by STIAS in 2017 to explore the Free Peoples Concerts and one of the events documented in this archive.
