Reparations for Victims of Apartheid

In spite of the increasing recognition in international law of the need for reparations for victims of serious human rights violations, the overwhelming majority of victims of Apartheid has not been compensated by the South African government and has not had access to legal avenues for the payment of such reparations. The issue of reparations has been described as one of the ‘unfinished legacies’ of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. This project focuses on the political and legal dimensions of the continuous calls for reparations. The efforts of the Khulumani Support Group will be studied as an example of social mobilization and reliance on international law as avenues for obtaining reparations. The aim of the project is to result in journal articles and a book.
