From 18 to 20 November 2013 STIAS will convene a Workshop on Mental Health to examine ways in which South Africa’s and Sub-Saharan Africa’s mental health challenges can be met in the next 20-30 years.
The initiative will be structured in two parts, starting with a Workshop over three days in November 2013, followed by a Roundtable over two days in February 2014.
The Workshop will cover technical discussion of recent developments in the literature and in the relevant policy domains. The Roundtable will attempt to convey the results of the Workshop in terms of the unfolding policy options and implications to policy makers and practitioners, while at the same time creating opportunities for researchers to learn about the concerns and challenges faced by policy makers and practitioners.
The theme for the Workshop will be From treatment to prevention: Addressing mental health challenges in South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. This initiative will be linked to a broader research theme on “Health in Transition” which STIAS will promote in the next five years with the support of the Wallenberg Foundation.
The Concept Note on the Workshop and Round Table is available here.

The draft programme for the Workshop will be available soon.
