This workshop will inform work by STIAS Fellows Arlene Archer, Anders Björkvall and Zach Simpson on the research project entitled Inclusive Participation in Higher Education: A Multimodal Genre Perspective from Sweden and South Africa (IpSSA, financed by the Swedish Research Council, 2024–2028). It will focus on discourses and semiotics of inclusion and exclusion in education as well as in other sectors of society. For instance, the common perception that inclusion for some will result in exclusion of others will be explored, and so will the perception that increased inclusion for some will increase inclusion for most. The workshop is also part of a new research network project entitled Informed Innovation for Inclusion – Towards Quality Education in Multilingual Learning Contexts (also financed by the Swedish Research Council, 2025–2028), which aims at bringing together researchers in Sweden and Africa. Thus, meeting, networking, and making plans for the future is also an aim of the workshop at STIAS. Researchers from both Sweden, South Africa and other parts of Africa will participate and will be offered the opportunity to share and discuss their research.
Participation in the workshop is by invitation only.
