Project:

A convergence of interest between expressivism and pragmatism

Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in pragmatism, both historically and in its contemporary form, particularly as it has developed through the work of Bob Brandom, Huw Price, Michael Williams and others. There has also been a convergence of interest between the position known as expressivism, as it has developed in my own work and in that of Allan Gibbard, and pragmatism, deriving from the way F. P. Ramsey saw himself as holding both those doctrines. In my time as a research Fellow I wil write further about this convergence, and the general theory of meaning that seems to be emerging. Both pragmatism (as for instance it was developed by John Dewey) and expressivism have public faces, and I would also want to make something of this apparent in my own approach.
