For a Latin American publisher I have undertaken to compile an anthology of world poetry. Each poem will be presented in its original language and in Spanish translation, and will be prefaced with an introduction by myself setting the poem in its literary-historical context and elucidating details that the non-professional reader may find puzzling.
The poems range in time from archaic Greece (one of the Homeric Hymns) to the present. Though the vast majority are from the West (a West that includes Russia), the anthology does include a long ritual poem from Arnhem Land (Australia) and Stephen Watson’s rewritings of pieces recorded by Wilhelm Bleek from the /Xam.
The anthology will appear as volume 10 of a 12-volume Personal Library. The other eleven volumes will be works of prose, in Spanish translation, selected and introduced by myself.
